So, why do I make you read this American classic? Well, it's a brilliant piece of Art. Yeah, I said it. Also, it's America's greatest answer to Shakespeare, and really we should celebrate that our country has Art that compares to the Great Bard--Big Willy. The novel is knotty (and naughty), the language is smart and dense, and it contains one of America's greatest female protagonists. If that's not good enough for you, well, there's a movie coming out this year called Easy A based on Hawthorne's novel. (However, you cannot...I repeat, cannot...watch the movie and pass the first quarter of this class! Please don't try.)
